We visited the old “school” in Spanish, where my partner’s great grandmother attended. This was where they placed the girls, the adjacent building where the boys stayed has since been burnt down. It is overwhelming to think of what children endured within these walls, you can almost feel the heaviness in the air.
Many Canadians are likely going to be celebrating “Canada Day”, already forgetting the horrors of last year’s recoveries of thousands of Indigenous children in unmarked graves. We will continue to mourn, knowing that there are still over a hundred schools to search.
